“Homosexuality Isn’t Natural or Healthy.”

That’s what greeted me this morning when I pulled up My Yahoo! to see what was going on in the world. Of course I had to click to see what that was about. It seems that President Bush’s nominee for surgeon general, Dr. James W. Holsinger Jr., wrote a paper with that thesis in 1991. Sounds like a conclusion that might have been reached back in the 1950s. I thought we all knew better than that now–or at least that the medical and mental health communities did.

Bush said, as he announced Holsinger’s nomination two weeks ago, that as “America’s chief health educator, [Dr. Holsinger] will be charged with providing the best scientific information available on how Americans can make smart choices that improve their health and reduce their risk of illness and injury.” And yet Holsinger provides information like this? What else will he get wrong?

You can read the whole story from ABC News.

The doctor is up for confirmation hearings in the Senate Health Committee soon (they haven’t been scheduled yet). If you’re as concerned about this doctor leading up our health community, won’t you drop a line to those on the committee (you can email the entire committee at help_comments@help.senate.gov), and let them know you think there are more qualified people to hold this important job and that they should not confirm Holsinger.
